Earlier this month, Christian Walenta was interviewed about certification by Dylan Jones of DataQualityPro.com. Dylan is an IAIDQ member and we were very glad of the opportunity to talk a little bit about the certification program.
Key points from the interview are:
- Certification is a very important step in the evolution of the IDQ profession.
- The IAIDQ community has invested heavily (in man-hours and dollar terms) in doing appropriate research and due diligence work to ensure that the certification meets the needs of IQ professionals today and into the future. (see Keith’s posts below for more on that)
- The certification is more than just an exam (and more than just one exam as part of a broader qualification. It will require:
- An application review step that essentially verifies that the candidate meets the CIQP work experience requirements,
- Meeting or exceeding the passing score for a multiple-choice exam (likely to consist of 150 questions over 4 hours), and
- Confirming adherence to an Information Quality Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct.
- CIQP candidates will be required to recertify every 3 years, similar to the PMI’s PMP certification. This is in keeping with the IAIDQ’s core value of Continuous Improvement which is so critical to sustained quality improvements.
- As a truly international association the IAIDQ is eager to ensure that the certification is available world wide. The exam will be a web-based exam format to help facilitate that.
- CIQP isn’t intended to replace existing IQ training courses that are available from skilled and passionate teachers (such as Larry English). Rather it is intended to be a neutral benchmark for people to work towards based on a defined syllabus framework. In the future the IAIDQ may develop a “train the trainer” program to certify trainers in the CIQP model, but for now we look forward to seeing established trainers incorporate our exam topics and knowledge domains into their own courses. This is what happens in other certifications.
- IAIDQ is developing a set of learning resources to assist in the study towards certification, and we would also look to existing trainers to incorporate our framework into their teaching. Where gaps exist, we’ll sponsor development of further resources and tools by the Community
- Costs will be competitive with other certifications.
- The plan is to begin roll out in the 2nd half of 2009.
